When to change your fuel pumps?
Fuel burning is an important process for normal operation of a car, and your car engine will not n work without it. The fuel pump takes fuel from fuel tank and pushes it to the engine cylinder to keep the engine in operation. Please note that if the following phenomena appear, there might be failures in your fuel pumps:
- When your car engine is underpowered or has difficulty in climbing slopes, the fuel pump fails to provide extra fuel for engine, which will produce extra power to drive the car, under this circumstance, you should check whether it’s time to change the fuel pump.
- There is no noise from fuel pump and when you turn the car key, there will be buzzing from engine fuel tank, which indicates sound operation of fuel pump, but if there is no such buzzing, you had better consider changing the fuel pump.
- Sometimes, there might be contaminations in the fuel, such as the corrosion particles in the fuel tank and as the fuel tank will pass through the fuel pump, which can lead to accumulation of corrosion particles on the fuel pump to block the fuel channel and if the fuel pump is unchanged, normal operation of the car will be seriously affected later.
How many types of fuel pumps are there?
There are many types of automobile injection system for modern cars, which require different fuels, but must be equipped with electric fuel pump to provide sufficient fuel to the engine. There are mainly two types of fuel pumps: mechanical fuel pump and electric fuel pump, of which, the former has some limitations in structure and should be installed far away from heat source and installed inside the fuel tank vertically, while the electric fuel pump can be installed flexible and will be free from any air resistance.
Where should the fuel pump usually installed?
Fuel pumps are installed inside the fuel tank, which requires prompt fuel filling when the fuel alarm light on, otherwise, when the is running out, the fuel pump will be exposed to air and if that exposure lasts too long, the fuel pump can be burned due to overheating.
How to check whether the fuel pump can work?
- Turn on the ignition lock and keep the car in park, there will be operation of fuel pump for 1-2 seconds, which indicates that the fuel pump can be operated normally;
- Unplug the fuel pump relay and connect the fuel pump circuit with special jumper wire, then turn on the ignition lock and keep the engine stop, if the fuel pump works, it is available for normal operation;
- Connecting the fuel pressure gauge to see whether the engine is available in fuel pressure around 250KPa and whether there is quick display of fuel pressure, if there is normal fuel pressure, the fuel pump can operate normally. Turn off the ignition lock to see whether the fuel pressure falls quickly and whether the pressure release valve of fuel pump is in normal operation (Normal fuel pressure can be sustained to achieve normal operation of the engine next time).
- Giving circuit connection to the fuel pump and use special measuring tool (such as beaker) to see whether the fuel output and recovery are normal.
How to avoid failures of fuel pumps?
To avoid failure of the fuel pump, it is necessary to change the fuel filter and clean the fuel tank to reduce chips and contaminations while replacing the fuel pump, besides, the fuel pump must be free from long term operation under low fuel level, bringing longer service life to fuel pump.
